Strings on the Bay concludes this Tuesday, August 6th at 7:30 PM at the Besse Center Theater.

The "True North Quartet,"  a string quartet group from the Ann Arbor area, are celebrating their 10th anniversary of bringing an annual concert to Strings on the Bay by inviting a musical guest. Violinists Paul Lundin, David Lamse, violist Joseph Deller and cellist Daniel Thomas are joined by cellist Katri Ervamaa to perform a program entitled “There’s Always Room for Cello!”

Ms. Ervamaa is a native of Finland and performed with the quartet as Mr. Thomas’ substitute in 2017. She was so impressed by her trip to the UP that she was eager to return. This year’s program will feature the C Major String Quintet by Franz Schubert. This work is one of the greats of the chamber music literature. It was composed in 1828 and finished just weeks before Schubert died at age 31. Music historian William Mann describes this work as “his masterpiece, and perhaps the greatest of all his works in range of emotion, quality of material and formal perfection.” It is a challenging composition to perform and the True North members are looking forward to conquering it! The first half of the program has two short movements of string quintets by 18th century cellist and composer Luigi Boccherini.

The “Rondo” from his C Major quintet and the “Fandango” from the D Major quintet opus 40. These two works are sure to put a smile on the faces of performers and audience alike.
